What is Rock Music? The History, Popularity, And Influence Of Rock Music

The Roots of Rock Music

Before the existence of rock and roll, there were a variety of different genres of music. African-American groups such as Big Bill Broonzy and Muddy Waters were popular with white and black listeners. It wasn't until the 1930s that country music became popular. It quickly caught on with both white and black audiences, but it wasn't until white country artists started reaching out to black audiences in the late 1940s that the country and rock world of the United States would become a new melting pot of different styles and traditions.

Origins

Music has been around forever and likely existed long before developing the first instruments like a flute or the first musical instrument to use strings. But today's music can be said to have emerged from the inventions of the piano, the guitar, and later a much faster music device called the piano-roll. 

But in the mid-1800s, as the Industrial Revolution was developing, several different cultures got together and found common ground in America and Europe. Then, in the 19th century, many Europeans returned home from travels and stories of their travels. These travelers brought instruments with them, and by the late 1800s, many of these instruments would find their way back to Europe.

One of the earliest forms of rock music is the blues. Blues music is an important part of the musical history of the United States. Blues music began in the early part of the 19th century and spread through the U.S. during the Civil War. By the late 19th century, most blues clubs were found in Southern cities like Memphis, New Orleans, and Chicago.

The blues was inspired by other African-American music, African music, and American country music. As one of the first forms of rock music, it is one of the most famous. Blues music blended with the elements of country music and rhythm and blues to form rock music.

Rock and Roll

Before the 1950s, music was very much centered around the piano and singer. Not much rock music was being produced, although artists like Louis Armstrong were recorded as early as the 1930s. Even after the rock was born in the 1950s, it was still heavily influenced by jazz music and other forms of music. Some rock groups experimented with rock and roll during the mid-1950s, but it wasn't until the 1960s that the style truly came into its own.

Johnny Cash, Elvis Presley, and Chuck Berry were among those who made their first notable appearances in England. Other artists soon made it to the charts, including the Beatles, who were just starting to be a name in the industry.

Although the Beatles are often credited as being the first band that made a big splash in the rock world, they didn't completely shake up the music scene.

Modern Rock
